Kazakhstan expels Uzbek detainees

AP has reported that Kazakhstan has violated the human rights of asylum seekers from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan by extraditing them to Uzbekistan where human rights group claim they face the threat of torture under the Uzbek government. The UN Committee Against Torture has urged the Kazakh government to ask for the return of the detainees and compensate them. Two of the men are accused of being terrorists, hence their deportation. Kazakhstan has claimed that they were only abiding by an international extradition agreement with Uzbekistan and that Uzbekistan has given assurances that the men’s freedoms and rights would be respected. Since the men were deported to Uzbekistan, they have been sentenced and jailed on charges relating to association with banned groups and plotting to overthrow the government.
